Training in Sports Psychology and Accreditation in the asp Expert Database for Performance Sports (EDL) as of 11/25
The landscape of sports psychology training is evolving dynamically, with numerous providers and various training and study programs now available.
At the same time, accreditation (admission) to the EDL is subject to defined criteria. Therefore, only the permissible training paths and the corresponding minimum requirements are presented below.
1) asp Curriculum
The Association for Sports Psychology (asp) offers a postgraduate training program called “Sports Psychological Coaching and Training in Competitive Sports”. The certificate courses are conducted by the Center of Mental Excellence (CME) under an asp license.
The CME offers two forms of participation: full attendance and guest attendance.
Only full attendance qualifies for accreditation on the EDL after successful completion. A prerequisite for this is a university-accredited M.Sc. in Sports Science or Psychology by the German Association for Sport Science (dvs) or the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP), based on a corresponding B.Sc. in these subjects.
Accreditation on the EDL
First, please send your CME completion certificate and your M.Sc. transcript in a PDF to the office of the asp: officeasp-sportpsychologie.org
Once your documents are complete, you will be issued the asp certificate “Sport Psychological Expert” and accredited on the EDL.
Important: The submission of complete documents can take place year-round.
2) University Education
Alternatively to the postgraduate asp curriculum, accreditation (admission) to the EDL can occur through sport psychology master’s programs, provided they are based on a university-accredited B.Sc. in Sports Science or Psychology by the dvs or BDP (see above).
However, equivalent and partially equivalent master’s programs are distinguished.
a) Equivalent Programs
The following sport psychology master’s programs are currently (as of 11/25) considered equivalent to the asp curriculum and allow for direct admission to the EDL upon successful completion, subject to the aforementioned academic criteria.
- Applied Sports Psychology (M.A.) at Martin Luther University Halle and
- Sports Psychology (M.Sc.) at BSP Business School Berlin
Accreditation on the EDL
First, please send your B.Sc. and Master's degree certificates in a PDF format to the office of asp: officeasp-sportpsychologie.org
Once your documents are complete, you will receive the asp certificate "Sport Psychological Expert" for a fee of €250 (plus 19% VAT), and you will be accredited on the EDL.
Important: The submission of complete documents can take place year-round.
b) Part-equivalent degree programs
The following master's programs in sport psychology are currently considered part-equivalent to the asp curriculum (as of 11/25).
- Psychology in Sport and Exercise (M.Sc.) at DSHS Cologne and
- Sport and Exercise Psychology (M.Sc.) at the University of Leipzig
Here uncovered study contents can be made up at BSP Berlin, MLU-Halle-Wittenberg, or at CME (only applies to Cologne). The practical and supervision/intervision modules can also be made up privately. After that, accreditation on the EDL can also take place.
Accreditation on the EDL
First, please send the following documents in a PDF format to the office of asp: officeasp-sportpsychologie.org
- Bachelor's and Master's Degree Certificates
- Excel spreadsheet (as PDF) with the made-up supervision and intervision hours
- Confirmations signed by the supervisors on official letterhead for the made-up supervision and intervision hours
- Excel spreadsheet (as PDF) with the made-up practical hours in the respective institutions
- Confirmations signed by managing personnel for the practical hours on official letterhead
As soon as your documents are complete, you will receive the asp certificate "Sports Psychological Expert" for a fee of €250 (plus 19% VAT), and you will be accredited on the EDL.
Important: Please submit your complete documents only during the periods of February 15-28 or August 15-31. Documents submitted before or after these dates will not be considered for the subsequent examination. The examination and, ideally, accreditation on the EDL will take place in the following March or September.
